Prayers to Mary

Marian Prayers

The Magnificat

Luke 1:46-55 RSV, Second Catholic Edition

And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm,
he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
he has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent empty away.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his posterity forever.

The Memorare

Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that it is a thing unheard of, that anyone ever had recourse to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, and was left forsaken. Filled therefore with confidence in your goodness I fly to you, O Mother, Virgin of virgins. To you I come, before you I stand, a sorrowful sinner. Despise not my poor words, O mother of the word of God, but graciously hear and grant my prayer.

Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother; to thee I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

The Angelus

The angel of the Lord declared to Mary;
and she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary …

Behold the handmaid of the Lord;
be it done to me according to your word.

Hail Mary …

And the Word was made flesh;
and dwelt among us.

Hail Mary …

Pray for us O holy Mother of God;
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Amen

Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ your Son, was made known by the message of an angel may be brought by his passion and cross to the glory of his resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Oldest Prayer to Our Lady

O mother of God
 we take refuge
 in your loving care.
 Let not our plea to you pass unheeded
 in the trials that beset us,
 but deliver us from danger,
 for you alone
 are truly pure,
 you alone
 are truly blessed.

Marian Antiphons

Alma Redemptoris Mater

Mother of Christ, hear your peoples cry.
Star of the sea and portal of the sky.
Sinking we strive and call to you for aid,
Mother of him who you from nothing made.
Oh by that joy which Gabriel brought to you,
you virgin first and last
let us your mercy see.

Ave Regina Caelorum

Hail O Queen of heaven enthroned,
Hail by angles Mistress owned,
Root of Jesse, Gate of morn,
whence the world’s true Light was born.
Glorious Virgin joy to thee,
loveliest whom in heaven they see,
fairest thou where all are fair
plead with Christ our sins to spare.

Regina Caeli Laetare

O Queen of heaven rejoice; Alleluia.
For he whom thou didst merit to bear; Alleluia.
He has risen as he said; Alleluia.
Pray for us to God; Alleluia.

Salve Regina

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope;
to thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us;
and after this our exile show unto us
the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary,
pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Amen.
